A winning poker strategy requires a combination of skill and intuition. A good player can keep a close eye on the cards, their opponents’ betting habits, and other information. They can also change their approach quickly when their opponent’s hand is changing.

Players are dealt three cards, one face-down and two face-up, with the lowest hand starting first. Then play proceeds clockwise until everyone has a chance to bet or fold.

The game begins with a player to the left of the dealer button posting a small blind bet (usually one or more chips). A dealer then deals the cards. Then the next player to the left of the button makes a bet, and so on until all players have made a bet or folded.

During each round, players must call or raise bets by putting into the pot the same number of chips as their previous bets; if they do not, they lose any chips that have put into the pot. Unless they make an initial forced bet, money is only placed into the pot voluntarily by players who believe the bet has positive expected value or who are trying to bluff their opponents.
